Simple Tooth Extractions in Yorkton

At Prairie Smiles Dental Group, our dentists only perform tooth extractions when less invasive options would be ineffective and if keeping the tooth would pose a risk to your overall oral health.

Our team regularly performs simple tooth extractions, where no incisions are needed and the tooth is removed directly from its place in the socket in the bone. This procedure is most often performed to remove a dead or decaying tooth or in preparation for other dental procedures, such as dental implants.

Why Would You Need a Simple Tooth Extraction?

There are many reasons your dentist may decide to remove one of your teeth. The most common reason for tooth extraction is severe decay, often due to poor oral hygiene, but some of the other reasons include:

  • Infection
  • Injury
  • Damaged Teeth
  • Gum Disease
  • Impacted Teeth
  • Overcrowded Teeth
  • In Preparation for Other Dental Treatments

The Tooth Extraction Process

If your dentist examines your X-ray and observes that you have a severely decayed tooth that cannot be saved, they may suggest extracting it. If a tooth needs to be extracted, the process will begin with your dentist numbing the area to minimize any discomfort you may feel during the procedure.

Once the numbing has set in, your dentist will use special tools to help loosen the tooth in the socket, before they use forceps to pull the tooth out. Your dentist will then disinfect the socket and may place a stitch to close the hole if necessary.

Your dentist will then fill the area with gauze, and instruct you to bite down on the gauze for a while to help control bleeding. Follow your dentist's instructions for aftercare, which may include hygiene instructions, a soft diet, antibiotics, and pain management.
