Invisalign FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions.
-
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a series of clear, custom-fitted aligners designed to straighten your teeth over a period of time without using metal wires and brackets.
During the consultation, we will use advanced 3D computer imaging technology to create a digital impression of your mouth, which will be used to formulate a treatment plan based on your unique smile and needs.
A series of custom clear aligners will then be manufactured to fit your teeth precisely during each stage of the Invisalign treatment process.
-
How does the Invisalign process work?
Invisalign clear plastic aligners are designed to move your teeth in tiny increments as your treatment progresses. You will wear each aligner for a certain number of days before it is replaced by the next one in the series.
This process will continue until your teeth are in their desired positions. Your dentist will determine the duration of your Invisalign treatment based on your specific needs.
-
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Everyone's smile is different, so every Invisalign treatment plan is different. Your dentist will be able to estimate how long your Invisalign treatment will take based on your needs and goals.
Factors that may determine the duration of your treatment include the misalignment of your teeth or jaw, the shape of your bite, and the amount of movement required to correct the problem.
-
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
The Invisalign aligners are made with USP Class VI medical-grade, high molecular weight polyurethane resins. They are BPA free.
-
How often do I have to visit the dentist?
Since Invisalign aligners do not need to be adjusted or tightened like braces do, your dentist will schedule brief appointments with you approximately every four to six weeks as needed throughout your treatment.
During these appointments, your dentist will take the opportunity to review your progress and general oral health, answer your questions, and adjust your treatment as required.
-
What are the primary features of Invisalign?
The features of Invisalign include:
- A discreet, low profile appearance
- Smooth construction for enhanced comfort
- Do not require adjustment appointments
- Removable for eating, brushing and flossing
-
How much does Invisalign cost?
The cost of Invisalign treatment will depend on the duration of your treatment and how many trays you need. For instance, the more severe the malocclusion, the more aligners you'll need and the more your treatment will cost.
In many cases, the cost of Invisalign is comparable to that of traditional orthodontic treatment.
-
What financing options do you offer?
We offer flexible financing options to support your Invisalign treatment journey. Speak to your dentist or click here to learn more.
-
How will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
Many patients find that Invisalign fits comfortably into their day-to-day life.
Since you take your aligners out to eat, drink, brush and floss, there are no dietary restrictions associated with their use. You'll also be able to maintain your regular brushing and flossing routine, being sure you are consistent and thorough every time.
-
Are there any food or drink restrictions?
Invisalign aligners are removable, meaning you can take them out to eat. As a result, there are no additional dietary restrictions when it comes to Invisalign, so you can continue to eat all the foods you love!
To avoid staining your clear aligners and potentially damaging your teeth, we recommend removing the aligners when you consume any beverages other than regular water.
-
How many sets of aligners will I need?
The answer to this question will depend on the severity of your misalignment.
During your initial consultation, your dentist can estimate how many aligners you will need based on their evaluation of your teeth and the amount of movement needed.
-
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Anyone who has healthy teeth and gums is a potential candidate for Invisalign.
More and more adults are deciding to undergo orthodontic treatment these days, in large part because options like Invisalign have become available.
-
Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens can certainly be candidates for Invisalign. In fact, Invisalign has created a line of aligners to meet the unique needs of teenagers.
Invisalign Teen aligners have compliance indicators on them (small blue dots that fade away after the aligners have been worn enough) to help teens stay on track with their treatment.
They also come with eruption tabs that provide space for second molars and help prevent them from growing in crooked.
-
How often do I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
Most patients change to their next set of aligners every two weeks or so, but your dentist will tell you how often you should switch out your aligners based on your unique case.
-
How do I clean my aligners?
Every time you take your aligners out to eat or drink, you should rinse them in warm water to help wash away any dry saliva and plaque that may already be building up.
To keep them clear and fresh, it is helpful to clean them with antibacterial soap and brush them gently. Then, rinse them again to get the soap off.
You can also soak your aligners as needed using a denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, and/or the official Invisalign cleaning crystals.
Most importantly, you must brush and floss your teeth before your aligners go back in. If you don't, you risk trapping food debris and bacteria between your teeth and the aligners, leading to decay and bad breath. Good oral hygiene is key to maintaining healthy teeth and helping to avoid cavities
-
Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are removable so you can play sports without worrying about causing damage to your aligners.
However, keep in mind that Invisalign aligners must be kept in for a minimum of 22 hours a day, so plan your time carefully.
It is also recommended that you invest in a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth, as orthodontic treatment can cause your teeth to loosen as they shift into their new positions, making them more susceptible to damage.
-
Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Yes! Simply remove your aligners if required to practice playing your instrument, and pop them back in when you're done.
-
How do I store my aligners?
Your Invisalign aligners will come with a case, and this is where they should be kept when you take them out to help keep them safe. Since the aligners are made of plastic you should avoid leaving them in hot areas as they could deform or melt.
