Why a Root Canal May Be Recommended
A root canal is performed to relieve pain caused by a decaying tooth and prevent further deterioration. By addressing the issue as soon as possible, you may be able to avoid needing more extensive treatments later on.
When your dentist removes decay and bacteria from the tooth, they help stop the spread of infection and restore the healthy areas of the tooth.
Most patients undergo root canal procedures with minimal discomfort and end up with a fully restored tooth. With proper care, treated teeth can last a lifetime.
The Root Canal Procedure
Root canals are often necessary to save a damaged tooth from completely dying and needing to be pulled.
During the procedure, your dentist will remove diseased tissue such as blood vessels, nerves, and other tissues from the interior of your tooth. They will then clean and disinfect the chamber, and fill it with medicated material to prevent infection from reoccurring. Generally, a root canal procedure is finished off with the tooth being capped by a dental restoration, such as a crown.
